Will my mother be protected from the IRS?

My step father owns a business where my mother has worked for a few years. She processed the payroll checks but was never fully aware that she was also responsible for payroll taxes. Now the IRS is after that money. Is there any way that she can be protected?

The IRS should limit their investigation and collection efforts to the company and/or the owners of the company. So long as your mother was not an owner of the company and she was simply an employee, then she should be protected from the IRS. The outcome may be significantly different depending on all of the facts of the case. I would recommend that your mother and step-father contact a tax attorney in your area to discuss these matters in detail so that they can be assured that they are either protected or doing the right thing to get the issue resolved.

You may contact our office to schedule an appointment if you have further questions or if you need assistance with this issue.
